Surname

Lema

Lucía Rodríguez Lema · 29 marzo 2018 13:23

Meaning of the surname
Lema is a Galician surname of toponymic origin. It is infrequent and is registered mainly in the province of A Coruña, where it comes from; but there are also families with the surname Lema in Pontevedra, Ourense, Lugo, León and Valencia, among others.
It comes from the place name of Lema, name of several towns in the province of A Coruña. It was taken as a surname by the residents of some of these localities, according to a custom of the Middle Ages to indicate the geographical origin of the people. It appeared between XI and XIV centuries, although the references of families with this surname are guaranteed from XV century.

Meaning of the coat of arms
The coat of arms of the surname Lema has the shape of a modern French shield (a quadrilateral with rounded bottom corners ending in a tip), possibly because, although its origin is Galician, the modern French shield was introduced in Spain in XVIII century.
It consists of, in the center, a profile lion of its natural color oriented towards the left, on a green background. Around there are eight yellow blades on a red field.
The color green symbolizes honesty, courtesy, service, respect and hope; the color red means courage, daring, honor and victory; yellow is a sign of nobility, wealth, generosity, wisdom and perseverance. Regarding the elements, the lion represents courage and fearlessness, and is the image of a brave soldier. It is associated with the nobility. The eight blades on the red background were awarded to the knights attending the capture of Baeza (Jaén) by King Don Fernando de Castilla to put on their family coats of arms for their nobility and courage.
