Torres de Altamira
Structure
The castle of the Torres de Altamira is located in the municipality of Brión, in the province of La Coruña. It was built on a hill and is now surrounded by an extensive landscape, including farmland, forest and a small village, and from here you can see the whole valley of Mahía.
The ruins are what remains of a medieval castle that was re-built in the 15th century, which in itself was built on the remains of an ancient fortification constructed in the 9th century, by the Moscoso family, who played an important role in the history of medieval Galicia.
The castle was partly destroyed by the Irmandiños during the Revolt, and the walls then rebuilt to withstand gunpowder.
After several other reconstructions, the castle eventually had six rectangular towers, a wall surrounding a palace, and the Chapel of the Magi, where the owners were buried in elaborate tombs, all of them included in an enclosure with a polygonal plan.
The castle remained with the family until the 17th century when the dilapidation of the castle began
After all the damage suffered from battles, a fire and time, only parts of the outer wall and the base remain. Some of the original stonework was even used by an Galician/American businessman to build his own house.
In 1973, the Diputación de A Coruña started restoration work on the castle, and it became a part of the National Heritage in 1994.
There have been several recent discoveries, such as coins, documents and even a piece of clothing.
Said discoveries are now stored in the Provincial Museum of Pontevedra.
