It means son of Álvaro or Alvar. The oldest know origin is that of the Álvarez of Asturias, who were the most powerful knights of the 10th century. Then there are the Álvarez of León, who were descendants of the previous ones and were the first governors of the state of Colima, Mexico in the XVIII century.

It is divided into 15 pieces, eight red and seven white. The red pieces symbolize charity and courage. The white pieces mean hope. In each white piece there are two bells, one on top of the other, that represent the warriors and they are blue since they symbolize justice and loyalty. Its shape means that it is a Spanish shield.
